The Bottom Line:
Browse the entire Khan Academy video catalog.
The Good:
- College classes in your pocket – This application can conceivably link users to approximately 2,600 free online videos covering various topics, including math, finance, biology, astronomy, computer science and many others.
- Up to date – This application is kept up to date by using the official Khan Academy API.
- Cost – It’s free!
The Bad:
- Needs Taxonomy – The app does not provide an easy way to navigate thru major subjects such as math, science and history. The subcategories are poorly arranged, forcing you to go through a long list to find what you’re seeking.
- No Search – The only way to search for a topic is to scroll through the list provided. The list is not alphabetized which makes searching even more challenging. A more detailed search functionality would have been very useful.
- Data connection required – You can only view the videos in the app through an Internet connection. An off-line version of this application would be great, but given the number of videos available, we understand why off-line usage is not feasible.
- Room for improvement: Favorite Feature – The app does not allow you to save classes and subjects as “favorites’, meaning you have to go through the entire search process to find a previous subject each time you use it. “Favorites” would be a very useful feature to add to this application.
The Ugly:
- We could not find anything ugly about this delightful app. If you think of something, please leave a comment and we will consider adding it to this post.
The Beautiful:
- Truly FREE resource – This Khan Academy unofficial app fulfills the academy’s mission of “providing a high quality education to anyone, anywhere.” We applaud the developer for managing to create an ad-free version.
